About Indonesia & context

Indonesia is a vast and diverse archipelago with a population of 242 million. According to the latest edition of the global state of harm reduction, there are 105,784 injecting drug users in Indonesia.

Unemployment, stigma and lack of services

Indonesia’s HIV epidemic is concentrated among specific high-risk groups, with HIV prevalence averaging 36% among injecting drug users. Prevalence of Hepatitis C is as high as 77.3% among this group.

Druguse and sexuality are taboo

Indonesia’s culture is conservative, and drug use and sexuality are taboo. As a result, drug users are harassed by the police and ostracised by their communities. Although official unemployment in Indonesia is low, 60% of drug users are without a job. This makes them economically vulnerable and less likely to access health services.
