Peer work training

Peer workers are central to good quality harm reduction programmes. But peers meet many challenges in their daily work. And organisations are not always sure how to deal with staff members who actively use drugs.

Mainline recently developed a new peer work training and tested it in five cities in South Africa.

Peer work guide and training

In 2020 Mainline assessed the needs of peer workers in South African harm reduction programmes. This led to a very practical guide and concrete recommendations.

The new peer training is based on the peer guideline we designed in 2020. And this training was first implemented in five cities across South Africa in April and May 2021.

Mainline Master Trainers

Since COVID-19 restricted Mainlines options to travel, we decided for a digital training, but with the close involvement of Mainlines South African Master Trainers. The result was a lively, interactive 'hybrid' training. A new experiment that further advanced Mainline blended learning offer.

Support

The development of both the assessment and the training for and about peer workers is funded via the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in South Africa.
